Week 9: EYEnstein of the Week!

Congrats to the man of the hour, Russell Doi!! He doesn't like attention, so make sure to to congratulate him and give him a big hug!! :)

Russell is a Class A citizen and a real gentleman. He's the type of guy who will walk you to your car late at night and open the car door for you. He will help you with your overflowing bags and kindly open the lecture hall door for you. He'll always take the time to ask how you are doing and sincerely mean it. If you're feeling down, he'll have a shoulder for you to lean on and make you feel special. BUT sorry to break it to you ladies...he's taken:(

Let's catch up with Russell!

1. Why did you pick SCCO?

"I picked SCCO because of my pops. He graduated back when they first switched the name from LACO to SCCO...yikes!

2. If you didn't go to optometry, what would you be doing now?

"If I didn't go to SCCO, I would probably be bumming around."

3. What are your hobbies?

"In my free time, I enjoy fishing and drinking...coffee."

4. What's your favorite movie and why?

"Nobody got time to read this we got disease to read!!!!!"

Although I can't tell you Russell's favorite movie and why, I can say that when he's not studying hard, he's spending quality time with his girlfriend, Rocio

You can catch him sleeping in class...

He volunteers for SVOSH...

He is basically a party animal...

Dear Eyensteins,

Happy Week 9 Everyone!! We have a lot going on this week so make sure stay up-to-date with the class Google calendar and keep your eye on Facebook in case I have any last-minute updates.

Updates:
  1. I bought us an extra 20 minutes for the Ocular Disease Midterm on Thursday. Already confirmed with Dr. Sendrowski.
    1. Disease Midterm will run from 9:00am-10:10am
    2. Pharmacology Lecture will run from 10:15am-12:15pm, Dr. Torres did us a huge favor and moved his lecture to allow us the extra time! I know we are all crunched for time this week, but I think it would be nice if you could make it to Pharmacology to show him thanks!
  2. Clinic Orientation currently scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th from 2:30-5:00pm. A couple of people have conflicts with this scheduling, if you have a conflict please email Dr. Chu yourself. I will be meeting with him to discuss other possibilities. I believe last year they also had the clinic orientation scheduled after the last finals, Dr. Chu just notified us suuuuper late and screwed us over a bit… I’ll keep you updated.
  3. Added lectures for OHP this week for Dr. Yacoub:
    1. Monday @11am
    2. Tuesday @12pm
    3. Dr. Yacoub needs the extra time to go over cataracts and retina.
  4. Thursday OHP Lecture - arrive 5-10 minutes early for the gonio assignment from Dr. Sawamura, Lecture still scheduled for the normal time.
  5. Chart Audit - YES we have to do these, and they are due to Dr. Sawamura or Dr. Lee by the end of Week 9. They are the blue sheets and you can pick them up in clinic. Just choose a patient chart on EMR in clinic that you either served as the intern or recording clinician.
  6. Visual Fields Assignment - Due Monday. See Dr. Lu’s email for details.
  7. No Optical shifts week 9 and 10 (yay!), our “field trip” to Bartley Labs will be rescheduled for sometime in the summer.
  8. Next year’s class cabinet is still looking for two people to take on the position of Historian! Contact me for more details.
  9. We are all going to be in and out of OHP lab and the other pre-clinic labs practicing all week, let’s do each other a favor and keep it clean and share the space while you’re in there!

EOTW WEEK 8

It's the moment you're all been waiting for....

Congrats, Natalie Kassar! Natalie is our Eyenstein of the week! (not that she's not special any other day)

If you've lost touch with Natalie because of our hectic schedule, we've got you covered. Let's see what's going on in Nat's world.

1. How do you feel now that your reign as VP is coming to an end?
Being Vice President of the United States has been fun but pretty stressful, so I’m glad it’s ending. JK. I’m definitely sad that our year of being on OD Board is over, mostly because it gave us plenty of great opportunities to get to know the first years. It also sort of forced us to socialize during a year where hiding at home and just sleeping whenever possible has been very tempting.

2. What do you have planned during the 1 week off before clinic?
I plan to be on a beach somewhere with a tropical drink in hand with all of my homies. Any takers??? But really we (my life partner, Krista, and I) have been talking about going on a cruise, so if anyone is interested let us know :-)

3. What are you most excited for and dreading as a third year?
I’m most excited to be in clinic more and the A100 rooms less! I am dreading Boards and having to relearn optics and remember the steps to glycolysis again.

4. What are 3 things we don't know about you.
I like taking pictures of people sleeping (heh).
I am secretly married to Justin Timberlake (I let Jessica Biel take the spotlight for me).
I was voted most athletic in high school for being the quarterback of the football team okay JK again, for playing volleyball and running track.

 5. Who is your biggest hero and why?
Jonathan because he isn’t afraid to say how he feels no matter how irrelevant it may be, and he is very passionate about the things he likes (turtles).

Dear Eyensteins,

Happy Week 8 everyone, get ready for a rough couple weeks ahead! I’m getting a little scared for the end of this quarter… I hope everyone is doing okay :)

Updates:
1.  Due to the upcoming release of the Apple Watch, watches are now banned during our exam times. Other universities are doing it too: http://www.buzzfeed.com/jimwaterson/yes-but-will-the-battery-last-a-full-day
a.     I told Dr. Chu that if they’re going to do this to us that they should monitor the clocks more frequently… he appreciates the tip.
b.     If you haven’t noticed, the clock in our classroom has finally changed!! Still 5 minutes late… but I guess that’s some progress?
2.  According to Campus Ops, the outlets in A102 have also been repaired, can I get some feedback on that?
3.  Ocular Disease for this week:
.              Dr. Sendrowski will be lecturing Wednesday (4/22)
a.             Dr. Nishimoto will be lecturing Friday (4/24) - don’t forget to bring blank sheets of paper, he will be drawing out the progression of bacterial keratitis
4.  Elect your future leaders for SCCO @MBKU here: https://my.ketchum.edu/ICS/MBKU_Student_Association__Ballot.jnz
5.  We are also looking for EYEnsteins for the position of Historian and Treasurer, please email me if you’re interested!
6.  It has been brought to my attention that many of our classmates are concerned about the remediation process/school policies. It is a little hazy what the remediation rules are and how many safety nets we have before we have to remediate a full course or year. I want to hold a meeting this Thursday at 12pm with the Class Cabinet and anyone who wants to discuss our school policies. It will be an open forum to anyone who has any ideas or any concerns that should be brought up to administration (to be honest I’m just as confused as everyone else). Let’s have it in our lecture hall.
7.  We are moving up the deadline for EOTYB to Friday, April 24th. Join us for our annual End of the Year Banquet! This year we will have it at LUCKY STRIKE Bowling Alley/ Bar on Thursday, May 21st, 2015 from 8pm-11pm. Congrats to the sweetheart of the class, Miss Olave Yee! Learn how she "juggles" life, how she's raising her little one and about her suspense-thriller!

Let's get to know Olave a little better, shall we?

1) What is like being a momma to Autumn?

Being a "momma" to this little, wild creature is... FANTASTIC! haha. She is so smart and I love her to death (I sound like a crazy parent, right?). She's such a happy dog that it just automatically puts me in a good mood no matter what kind of day I've had. She's a great distraction and I dedicate as many of my study breaks to her as I can. If I'm not at school or at work, I'm at the doggy park or at the doggy beach with autumn! Next time you see her, introduce yourself because she likes to shake your hand when you say "nice to meet you" in french :P

2) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I'll be 30 years old (OMG :0) and... according to the movie "13 going on 30", I'll be "thirty, flirty, and thriving" lol jk.

Ok, I would hopefully be back in Irvine or Newport Beach by then and. I'd absolute love to be working at a group practice nearby, And... since I'll be out of school I'm hoping I'll have an opportunity to dedicate extra time to other things I love to do. I'll hopefully be taking more cosmetology classes to be able to do more cool photoshoots, tackle on a few more languages (can't wait to seriously start learning sign language), and hopefully still at my job at Michael Kors. I like to do too many things at once, I know, but I guess that's what keeps me sane haha. (I know what you're thinking... or... insane).

3) What's your hidden talent?
My hidden talent would probably have to be... oh man, this is hard. Juggling? Is that a hidden talent? haha In 6th grade we all had to learn to juggle in order to pass P.E. I've been dying to try to juggle clubs ON FIRE!

4) Who would play you in a movie and what genre would it be?
I would have to say that Selma Blair would play me in a movie. It would have be a suspense-thriller with some kind of supernatural theme to it. YES!

5) What's your favorite memory at SCCO so far?
Hmm.. there are so many! But, I think I would pick going to Tijuana with SVOSH during first year.  We got the chance to help out some poor communities and it was just an amazing experience to make such a big difference in so many people's lives. Not to mention this man was so happy with his new glasses that he gave us the biggest block of cheese and 1 kg of tortillas. Just awesome helping such genuine, humble people.

Hey Eyensteins,

Shout out to all the EYEnsteins who performed during the Talent Show, you were all amazing!!

Happy Week 6!

Have you been keeping up with Christina Nguyen lately? Our belated Birthday girl wants to read your mind with her superpowers, but have no fear because a simple piece of fruit is her kryptonite. Intrigued?

Here's how her interview went:

1. If you can have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Probably telepathy. I think it'd be really interesting to see what everyone's secretly thinking. That and I'm also really nosy hahaha.

2. What can we find you doing when you're not studying hard?

If I'm not studying (which is all the time), I'm probably eating something. I'm a huge foodie so I love going out to eat and trying new foods! Let's be real, my future profits as an optometrist are all going toward food.

3. What is something we don't know about you?

I'm allergic to fruit! It's not deathly, and there's no anaphylaxis or anything, but my throat will swell up/get itchy and my lips can get red and swollen as well. Not like any of this stops me from eating fruit anyway haha.

4. What's your guilty pleasure?

Oh my god, I love trashy reality shows. But not just any trashy reality shows. Trashy reality shows about rich people. My favorites are Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules. If anyone else watches them, we should have a viewing party

5. If you were given $1 million dollars what would you do with it and why?

If I was given a million dollars, I would definitely give at least half of it to my parents. They came from Vietnam with nothing and worked hard to build the life that they have now. They've sacrificed everything they ever had for me, and I want to be able to pay them back one day. As for the other half of the money...that would probably be spent paying off my student loans hahaha cry.

Happy Easter Sunday Eyensteins!!
I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend with friends and family :) We have another busy week ahead.

  1. I've heard that many people want a re-vote on moving the Non-Strab BV midterm. I'm assuming it's because we got our Disease MT results and people are more worried about the second midterm. I made a new form to vote for the Non-Strab BV midterm, just as before we would need 75% of the votes to be in-favor or not-in-favor of moving the midterm. Keep in mind that I already notified both Dr. Chu and Dr. Barnhardt that we were all okay with moving the midterm... so I will have to meet with them on Monday to see if they've honored my previous request. With that being said, everyone who cares at all about the matter, please vote by 10pm tomorrow (Sunday, April 4th). https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1LnboIODWdfUBimTUiaweFSfPbWxvcP_W1FzCWmtFVTo/viewform?usp=send_form
  2. The summer and fall clinic schedules are out! See email from Connie Phung for details.
  3. OHP Final Proficiency - I am working closely on this with Dr. Lu at the moment… she is trying to push in our favor as much as possible! As of right now we will be having the Final Proficiency Week 10 (Mon/Tues) and retakes will take place on Thursday, May 7th (Finals Week 1). We will know the official schedule, individual time slots, and groups soon!! - Stay Tuned.
  4. Join us for our annual End of the Year Banquet! This year we will have it at LUCKY STRIKE Bowling Alley/ Bar on Thursday, May 21st, 2015 from 8pm-11pm. Your ticket will get you free bowling on private lanes rented for the event, shoe rental and food. There's also a full cash-bar for drinks! Tickets are on-sale NOW:

      1. $18 for all guests, purchase by May 1st
    2. Make EYEnstein Superlatives Nominations Here: http://goo.gl/forms/FUxvON8cKT
  5. Did you ever think you had what it takes to be a Class Cabinet Officer? Is event planning and organizing one of your hobbies? Do you want to get to know your classmates better and help them have the best 3rd year ever? If you answered YES to any of these questions, or you know someone that would be a great fit, then running for EYEnstein Class Cabinet is the thing for you!! We are now taking nominations for the positions of President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary, and Historian. Nominations will end Friday, April 3rd. Please make your nominations here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1O20_ZygneA8kCWUoUeky-v68DKFABtqm1BpoXADT2Ug/viewform?usp=send_form
